Kamloops has adopted a new set of rules which will permit the homeless to sleep in city parks.
The Director of Community and Protective Services Byron McCorkell says the riverbanks are typically the location of choice, so the city is simply changing the language in the bylaw to clarify when and where temporary overnight shelters are permitted.
“We clearly identified those areas in the parks where we would not permit this to occur so we have listed off playgrounds, swimming pools, wading pools, and horticultural display areas.”
The bylaw outline some general rules, such as permitted hours 9:00 PM-7:00 am, March through November and the occupant’s responsibility to remove the shelter, including all possessions and waste, outside those hours.
