While no cost was attached to implementing the Abbott -Chapman report on wildfires and floods, we now have a clearer picture of how much money it may take.
The document contained 108 recommendations.
Former Cabinet Minister George Abbott says, however, he cannot offer anything specific.
“Clearly if all the 108 recommendations were embraced. We would looking in the hundreds of millions of dollars for building all of the partnerships and having all the tools.”
The report says the wildfires demonstrated the consequences of ignoring a growing gap between spending on response versus reducing the impacts of disasters in advance.
One of its key recommendations is to fight fire with fire through the technique of prescribed burns.
