A website set up by Fair Vote Canada to fact check claims in the B.C. proportional representation debate was taken down by a denial of service attack.
“Its disturbing that this kind of thing would happen.”
Spokesperson Gisela Ruckert says the website was down for about a day after being flooded by requests from an army of infected computers.
“And it makes it almost impossible to stop it very simply. So it’s quite a sophisticated attack. Our tech guy says that its generally use of a bot net that has to be brought in to do this kind of sophisticated attack.”
Ruckert says she can’t begin to guess who might be behind it.
“But it seems to me that somebody doesn’t want voters to get the facts about electoral reform. So people are playing tricks and trying to mess with voters.”
She says this is the second online attack on Fair Vote Canada after hackers went after its servers in June.
