Kamloops RCMP say they will take a wait and see approach as marijuana is legalized across the country.
“Business as usual there’s no special response.”
RCMP Superintendent Syd Leckie says his primary focus will be dealing with drug impaired driving.
Leckie says Kamloops RCMP do not yet have their hands on the federally approved Draeger Drug Test 5000 saliva testing machine.
“My understanding is that they are still in the procurement stage and being rolled out but we don’t have them in hand at this point in time. So we won’t be using them for now. We still have the old tried and true methods that are proven and we will continue along those paths meaning we will be using drug recognition experts.”
Leckie says there are no plans for stepped up enforcement.
Several municipal police forces have opted not to use the device.
