While there’s been a lot of snow and rain on the Coquihalla between Merritt and Hope this week, the weekend should be a lot better.
That’s according to Environment Canada’s Matt MacDonald, who says it should be a decent drive just ahead of Christmas.
“From Friday afternoon onwards, right through the weekend, it looks a lot better for the high mountain passes,” he said. “No big storms and the overall weather pattern is really starting to ease off after a very busy two weeks.”
Environment Canada says approximately 42 cm of snow has fallen near the Coquihalla summit since Monday night. It’s tapered off to a few flurries this morning.
There is another storm expected to hit tonight, bringing more snow to the Coquihalla, in the range of 25 to 40 cm by Friday morning.
Tomorrow’s storm, MacDonald notes could also be a mix of snow and rain at times.
“People might get tricked because it is very mild at valley bottom so what you see out of your window is very different from what’s happening up in the highway passes,” added MacDonald. “So be sure to check DriveBC before hitting the road.”
“Webcams, in particular, can give you an idea of how things are up there.”
