The City of Kamloops is inching closer to putting something of substance on the table in terms of the idea to dome Hillside Stadium.
Director of Community Services Byron McCorkell says the turf and track at Hillside stadium need to be replaced and wouldn’t make sense to do that and then tackle installing a dome.
“Well we have done all the preliminary design work and I think that is basically where we are at now. We know now that it could be built, that it would fit, the suppliers are convinced that they can do it. It would be a very large dome. We are told the biggest in western Canada if not the country.”
McCorkell says the only thing left is to confirm the business case for the dome.
“We have the turf and the track to be done so it would look kind of silly if we did those and then all of a sudden we ripped up the side of the track to in the grey beam for the dome. The only thing that is remaining now is confirming the business case for it and then we will be coming forward to council. We also have our recreation master plan going on so we want to fit that whole conversation together in June. Then we are planning on coming forward to council in the next budget cycle.”
He says the city has been looking for an indoor facility for soccer and other sports for some 20 years.
