The next step for a multi-million-dollar water metering project within the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.
Environmental services director with the TNRD Jake Devlin says the regional district board will be briefed on the timeline for the project this week.
“We are preparing right now a request for proposal that will be put out to companies for the supply and installation of meters on 11 systems over the next couple of years,” he says.
Devlin says he expects water meters will begin being installed late this summer and will likely be done in 2021.
He says the meters will conserve water, ensure fair billing and detect any leaks in the TNRD’s water systems.
“There are also benefits in terms of reduced infrastructure and operating costs, which of course benefit all our customers as a whole,” he says. “And having meters in place also increases access to future grant funding; grant programs are increasingly giving preference to water systems using water meters to encourage water conservation.”
The cost to install the meters is just under $3.5 million which will be fully covered by a federal grant.
The new meters will affect about 2,300 customers who use TNRD water systems, in Black Pines, Blue River, Del Oro, Evergreen, Loon Lake, Maple Mission, Pritchard, Savona, Spences Bridge, Vavenby and Walhachin.
