The current contract between the City of Kamloops and the BC Lions comes to an end after next year’s camp, and what the future holds beyond that remains to be seen.
Lions Director of Communications Jamie Cartmell says the team gets a lot of offers from other communities hoping to lure the Lions over.
But he notes Kamloops has been a great home for the past decade.
“We’re not just players and coaches. There’s 125 to 130 of us between the training staff and digital people and the coaching staff,” he said on the NL Morning News. “You got to be able to host that many people, you’ve got to have a facility like Hillside Stadium with an all weather surface just in case the weather is not what you want it to be and a place to eat that can accommodate you as well.”
Cartmell adds all of the venues they use in Kamloops are close to each other, which makes things convenient for the team.
“It’s not convenient to go from a residence onto a bus to go and eat and then bus to a stadium and stuff. Admittedly, we’re probably spoiled here compared to some other CFL cities outside of those who just use their own home stadium,” Cartmell added. “It’s a combination that has yet to be met or exceeded, that’s for sure.”
The Lions are in the Tournament Capital until June 6, and have been holding training camp in Kamloops since 2010.
