The Kamloops School Board officially adopted the move for Parkcrest Elementary to George Hilliard with a couple of tweaks.
At Monday’s meeting, the board decided to look for a different location for TREC students as they will be moving to Norkam High School on an interim basis.
Chair Kathleen Karpuk says being at a secondary school was one concern for parents.
“They really indicated that they felt they needed to be together to support each other. So we will be looking for a location that we can have Twin Rivers and Four Directions all together. In the interim, they will be at Norkam, but we are looking for a long term home for them for the next little bit where they will all be together.”
Karpuk adds there is no timeline at this point.
“Obviously we’re going to be moving on that as quickly as we can. At this point, logistics, trying to find a space that is going to be big enough for everyone. It takes time to order in portables. We will be moving as fast as we can, but we do ask for patience.”
Meanwhile, Four Direction Students will be moved into the United Way’s new Collaboration and Change Lab.
Kamloops Executive Director Danalee Baker says the timing worked out.
“We have 7300 square feet of space that is meant for community. So, for this opportunity for us to help is exactly what we built this building for. And so we will be housing the Four Directions students. 34 students plus their after school program and another community led learning program.”
Also at the SD73 board meeting, Karpuk says trustees approved $70,000 from its business management fees. $50,000 for Parkcrest teachers and staff to rebuild lost materials. It also approved $20,000 for school supplies for students.
