UPDATE:
The two people killed in Sunday morning’s fatal car crash in downtown Kamloops have been identified through social media.
Feyisola Adebowale, who also goes by David, and Daniel Okocha both died at the scene when the crash happened on First Avenue and Battle Street, just after 1:30 a.m.
Adebowale had spent the past six months working in Sun Peaks at the Coast Sundance Lodge, and both he and Okocha had attended Thompson Rivers University. Both students were in their 20s.
All four people in the car involved in the crash were originally from Nigeria and were all international students at TRU.
TRU president Brett Fairbairn says in a statement that counselling is available for students, faculty, and staff impacted by the incident.
“Our deepest thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and on behalf of TRU, I offer our condolences,” he said. “As these were international students and alumni, our concern is also for our colleagues at TRU World. We grieve with them, along with others – friends, classmates and professors.”
One other person in the car involved suffered life-threatening injuries, and another suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says police are still gathering evidence from the crash, after the driver of the truck involved left the scene before police arrived. The registered owner of the truck was arrested several hours after the crash, but was later released without charge.
“Our investigation is ongoing as to whom the driver was at the time of the accident,” Shelkie says.
The cause of the deadly crash also remains unclear.
More to come.
