A night to remember for the Kamloops Blazers at the CHL Top Prospects game.
Connor Zary had three assists, including on the game winning goal, while Dylan Garand made 10 saves to take the win as Team White beat Team Red 5-3.
Two of Zary’s assists were primary assists to line-mate Tyson Foerster of the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) as the pair found some chemistry together in the second period.
“I had a couple chances in the first where I didn’t bury and it kind of ticked me off,” Zary told Sportsnet post game. “But just being able to feed other guys and seeing them put the puck in the net makes me just as happy as me getting a goal myself.”
His third assist on the game winning goal came as Braden Schneider of the Brandon Wheat Kings scored at 13:12 of the second period.
Garand came on midway through the second in relief of Samuel Hlavaj of the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and he allowed two goals on 13 shots on the night.
Kaiden Guhle (Prince Albert Raiders) and Cole Perfetti (Saginaw Spirit) scored the other goals for Team White, while Jeremie Poirier (Saint John Sea Dogs), Jack Quinn (Ottawa 67’s), and Dawson Mercer (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) scored for Team Red.
Brock Gould (Moose Jaw Warriors) played the full game for Team Red after Nico Daws (Guelph Storm) withdrew due to injury. He made 27 saves on 31 shots.
Earlier this week, Zary was ranked 12th among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting’s midterm rankings, while Garand was seventh among North American goalies.
The Blazers play three games this weekend, starting with two at home against the Tri-City Americans on Friday and Saturday, followed by a Sunday afternoon game away to the Vancouver Giants. You can catch all three games on Radio NL.
