The first presumptive case of the new coronavirus has now been confirmed in British Columbia.
Provincial Medical Health Officer Doctor Bonnie Henry says the patient was aware of the illness and self-quarantined on his arrival back to the province.
“So this person is a male in his 40’s and a resident of the Vancouver Coastal Health region,” Henry said. “He regularly travels to China for his work and was in Wuhan city on his most recent trip. He returned to Vancouver last week and had onset of symptoms after his return.”
The man’s test results on the “presumptive positive” case are now being sent to the federal lab in Winnipeg, and Henry says the results are expected back within 48 hours. If confirmed, it would be the first case of coronavirus in the province.
There is also one confirmed case in Toronto, and the wife of the infected man is also presumed to have the virus. Cases have also been confirmed in the United States, France, Australia, Singapore, and Denmark, among other countries.
In China, there have been more than 4,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with at least 106 deaths.
