The City of Kamloops will be applying for $12 million in grant funding to pay for a portion of Phase 3 of the Tranquille Sewer main project.
It’s as work is set to get underway in 2025, from Crestline Street to Southill Street, at a cost of $16.4 million in 2025 dollars.
Development Services Director Marvin Kwiatkowski says if the grant application is successful, the City would pay the remaining $4.4 million of the total project cost, coming from the city’s sewer fund.
“So the Tranquille Sewer main, I think there are about 48,000 people that it services, so it services a significant portion of our community,” he told council. “It’s a significant main. It’s been aging, and it requires replacement as well as the increased capacity.”
Phase 2 of the project from Southill Street to 12th Street is set to get underway next month. Phase One, west of Crestline Street towards the Airport was completed in 2017.
“When we do a project, we look at the full corridor. So along with this project in 2025, we’d look at other corridor enhancements,” Kwiatkowski said. “So we’re looking at multi-use paths, sidewalks, trees, and just making it look more appealing and safer for pedestrians.”
He told council the money for those upgrades is not part of the total project cost, but noted that there would be cost savings by doing those enhancements at the same time as the rest of the project.
The city says the overall project will reduce the risk of sewer trunk main failures, and the associated environmental and health impacts, while also supporting the growth and densification along the Tranquille corridor on the North Shore.
