The Kamloops Blazers season is on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It’s as the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) has suspended the regular season of its three member leagues – the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – until further notice.
It’s an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and comes as the NBA, NHL, MLB, and AHL all announced similar suspensions.
Blazers President and COO Don Moores was asked about fans who’ve put money down on tickets both for the rest of the regular season and the upcoming playoffs.
“I’m not surprised that people would be wondering about that,” he told NL Sports. “I think if I can just ask all of our fans just to give us a little bit of time here to collect our thoughts and get a bit of a game plan as far as where we’ll be going and moving forward with that. We’ll try to get things out as quickly as possible.”
Moores says he understands fans are disappointed as the Blazers were having their best season in years.
“Everyone is numb. We’re pretty excited about where we are and where we could be going, and we’ve got lots of work ahead of us,” he added. ”
It’s just that we’d like to get on with it, but it’s important to reiterate that it’s so important that we take care of our players. Their health and safety is critical to us.”
It’s the first time the WHL season has been suspended since inception. The Blazers were to meet the Kelowna Rockets tomorrow night.
There’s no word on when the season will resume and what the next steps might be. There were two weekends left in the WHL season, and playoffs were to begin on March 27.
Blazers President & COO Don Moore spoke to Radio NL’s Jon Keen about what this move means, and what fans can expect.
