A medical clinic in Revelstoke is confirming the first case of COVID-19 in the B.C. Interior city.
The Selkirk Medical Group took to social media to say that visiting heli-skiers had tested positive upon returning to their country, noting they may have unwittingly exposed others during their time in Revelstoke. It is not know which country the heli-skiers were visiting from.
“We would like to encourage and support Revelstokians,” the clinic said. “This was inevitable.”
The post went on to say that there is no evidence yet of community transmission, as this case relates to international travel. It is also not known if this is a new case of the coronavirus in Interior Health, or one of the existing seven existing cases.
In announcing the new cases, provincial health authorities have only released the health authority where a person lives, and not a specific city.
“This information has been reviewed and confirmed by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC),” the post added. “As directed by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, all contact and exposure tracing has been completed, all isolation protocols [have been] followed.”
Selkirk Medical Group says more cases can be expected because COVID-19 is a pandemic, with cases increasing across the province. As of Tuesday, BC had 186 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
“All patients should feel safe in their care by health care providers, knowing specific details of their situation are confidential,” the post said. “As a community, we are in this together.”
“We cannot more strongly stress the importance of each person’s role in flattening the curve by reducing contact with each other through social distancing and self isolation.”
