The Premier says there’s no plan right now to cut down the cost of car insurance in B.C. because of the pandemic.
John Horgan was asked after announcing a subsidy program for another Crown corporation, BC Hydro.
“I know [Attorney General Dave Eby] has been focused on ICBC since about 24 hours after he was sworn in and given the responsibility, and it has been an extraordinary task without COVID-19. I know that we’re looking at an enhanced-care model going forward. That’s being developed right now so we can reduce costs for people, all classes of drivers. And that’s the priority of the Minister at this time,” Horgan says.
“You will know that the cost of driving has decreased because of the cost of gasoline going down as well, the lowest it’s been in recent memory for sure. I don’t believe we have any programs contemplated to reduce auto insurance costs as a result of COVID-19. But that’s a good suggestion, I’ll mention it to Minister Eby next time I talk to him.”
While no rate reduction is available at ICBC, drivers can defer their car insurance payments for up to three months.
