People in the Interior Health region are being warned about a COVID-19 outbreak at a work camp north of Fort McMurray.
The warning from the IHA comes after an outbreak was declared on Wednesday at the Kearl Lake oil sands project by Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw.
There have been 12 people connected to that work camp who have tested positive for the virus, and IHA says there’s a possibility of community spread between the work camp and the southern Interior, saying many people work there who live here.
IH says anyone who may have directly or indirectly been in contact with a worker at the Kearl Lake oil sands should self-isolate for 14 days. It says anyone who shows symptoms of COVID-19 needs to self-isolate regardless.
As of Saturday morning, there have been 2,397 cases of COVID-19 and 50 deaths reported in Alberta and 1,618 cases and 78 deaths in B.C.
