Good news for movie lovers in Kamloops as the Twin Rivers Drive-In theatre will be returning for the rest of the summer.
Organized by the Kamloops Film Society, it will get going at McArthur Island this weekend, July 10 to 12. Film Society Executive Director Dusan Magdolen says it was a no brainer to bring the movie theatre back.
“Everyone had a good time and people were excited and I got some emails from people saying how great it was at the end of June,” he said. “So yeah, we wanted to pursue it and we got our ducks in a row and we able to start back up again and we’ll be now running till the end of September.”
“The city is a partner, and I think they always saw the benefit of it but I think they wanted to see one weekend happen and then make a final decision. We are going to continue doing it at McArthur Island and its exciting.”
Doors will open at 9:00 p.m., and the first movie – Onward – will begin at 9:30 p.m., followed by the second movie – Black Panther – which is scheduled to begin around 11:47 p.m..
In keeping with provincial guidelines, each night will be limited to 50 vehicles with a maximum of six people in each vehicle. Tickets for the first weekend will go on sale today online here.
Magdolen adds the film society will be picking what movies are shown, and he’s hoping to have as much of the schedule out as soon as possible.
“The programming has been a bit of a thorn in our sides,” he added. “My hope is to be able to announce multiple dates, maybe even a month or two worth at some point to allow people to sort of plan and book and get excited about what we’ve got coming up.”
The first iteration of the pop up movie theatre sold out within hours and organizers told NL News at the time that the hope was to make the drive-in theatre a regular event this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
