The B.C. government indicates that it’s not considering back-tracking to phase two of reopening, after an outbreak of COVID-19 in downtown Kelowna.
Health Minister Adrian Dix says the re-opening plan has been methodical since day one, and has been based on science.
“We have to understand that while we’ve done very well in B.C., we cannot become complacent. We can’t ever become complacent. And that’s especially important. I understand, and there’s enormous reasons to want to travel this beautiful province during this beautiful summer. But when we do that, we can’t be on vacation from our responsibilities.”
Interior Health CEO Susan Brown says it’s important people continue to be mindful of the rules about social-distancing.
“We’ve done very well in the Interior and we will continue to do very well… The Interior of B.C. is an amazing place to come and visit. We don’t want to discourage people from coming, but we want people to be mindful of their behaviour.”
The outbreak in Kelowna started just two days after the province moved to phase three. As of Monday afternoon, there are now at least 13 cases linked to that outbreak, including at least seven people from out-of-town.
The outbreak is believed to be linked to people who were partying at a resort who were in their 20s and 30s.
Anyone who attended gatherings at Discovery Bay Resort between July 1-5 or the Boyce Gyro Beach Lodge on July 1 is being asked to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms. Anyone who gathered along the waterfront in downtown Kelowna between June 26 and July 5 is being asked to monitor for symptoms.
Meanwhile, anyone who was at the Cactus Club restaurant in Kelowna between July 3-6, or the Pace Spin Studio on July 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 or 9 is being asked to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms as well.
