The city of Kamloops will be the first to host a sanctioned athletics club competition since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but there won’t be any spectators present.
Its as the Kamloops Throws Meet #2 is set to take place at Hillside Stadium this weekend on August 1 and 2.
“Our athletes are beyond excited for this opportunity,” Dylan Armstrong, the Throws Coach for the Kamloops Track and Field Club said. “Athletes will be able to track official marks and results that are eligible for provincial and national records and rankings.”
He says the club has worked closely with Athletics Canada, BC Athletics, and viaSport to develop guidelines to allow for safe competitions that follow current BC Health guidelines. That includes a maximum 50 people present, physical distancing and other hygiene measures, and daily symptom screening.
“We are thrilled to begin our gradual and thoughtful return to safe event and competition hosting in Kamloops,” Sean Smith, the City’s Business Operations and Events Supervisor added. “The KTFC and our Parks and Facility crews have worked hard to prepare for a successful event that is safe for the athletes and our community.”
This weekend’s meet will be followed the Kamloops Throws Meet #3 the following Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8 and Kamloops Throws Meet #4 on August 13
