Kamloops councillor Sadie Hunter is hoping to represent the Tournament Capital at the Union of B.C. Municipalities.
Hunter has been nominated as a director-at-large, which five council members from around B.C. are picked for every year.
Kamloops mayor Ken Christian says Hunter has the energy, passion and skill set to represent Kamloops on the board.
“I would hope that councillor Hunter would be able to get elected and continue in that very fine tradition. I think it’s monies well spent for both the UBCM to have councillor Hunter, and for Kamloops to endorse her candidacy.”
Hunter’s nomination comes as Kamloops councillor Arjun Singh will not be seeking reelection to the UBCM this year, to instead run for a seat with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Singh has spent the past seven years on the UBCM board, including being its president two years ago.
“Our provincial and federal work is critical and key, and it is important to have people there who actually understand our community and can bring things back in an ethical way, I always say. UBCM does pay the freight and we don’t have any costs associated with that. But it’s a pretty awesome job and I wish councillor Hunter all the best,” Singh says.
The vote for the new UBCM directors will happen at its annual convention in September, which this year will be virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
