A Kamloops city councillor will serve as a Director-at-Large on the Union of BC Municipalities executive board for the next 12 months.
Sadie Hunter was one of five people to win a seat at the table yesterday during the UBCM’s annual convention.
“I decided it was a good fit for me and for Kamloops because it’s really important to have representation at the table for the interior of BC,” she said yesterday on the NL Morning News, when asked why she’s was running.
“So, I think it’s really important to have somebody who understands that difference between urban and rural communities and regional districts and to represent their voices in all those areas.”
Hunter says outgoing Board Member and fellow Kamloops councillor, Arjun Singh was as supportive of her bid to win a seat as he was allowed to be.
“He was the chair of the nominating committee so he’s really hands off. He provided general guidance which he would provide to any candidate who had questions,” Hunter said. “He was very supportive obviously but he’s supportive of anyone that wants to pursue UBCM, but I appreciate his number of years of service on the board and his knowledge and insight in general.”
“I think it will be valuable to have somebody who is in Kamloops and the Interior of BC representing especially now that Arjun is going to be finishing up after the conference.”
Joining Sadie Hunter her as Directors-at-Large are Port McNeill mayor Gaby Wickstrom, Fort St. John councillor Gord Klassen, East Kootenay director Susan Clovechuck, and Port Moody councillor Amy Lubik.
Vanderoof Councillor Brian Frenkel was acclaimed as President or the 2020-21 term. Quesnel councillor Laurey-Anne Roodenburg was acclaimed as the First Vice-President, while Whistler Councillor Jen Ford was also acclaimed as the Second Vice-President.
Fernie Mayor Ange Qualizza was elected third vice president in a run-off vote after the original vote yesterday ended in a tie.
What a day! Tremendous gratitude to everyone who cast their vote for me for Director at Large for @UBCM 🙏 I appreciate your support and look forward to working together!#UBCM2020
