Kamloops City Councillor Sadie Hunter will be the BC NDP candidate for Kamloops-North Thompson in the Oct. 24 provincial election.
She was acclaimed as the party’s candidate and officially unveiled this morning at McDonald Park on the North Shore.
Hunter says she learned about the opportunity to run within the last two weeks and was asked how long she’s been considering a run for provincial politics.
“Personally, it wasn’t on my radar. I’ve always stated that my interest is to provide support through my education and experience to the residents of Kamloops and to the area, and bring my best to the table,” Hunter said. “Until I was asked, it wasn’t on my radar.”
“When it comes down to it at the end of the day, no matter where you are, is listening and relationships. And being able to understand and take those needs and those concerns forward, and find solutions that work for everyone.”
Hunter is in the middle of her first term on city council after she was elected in 2018. Last week, she was elected a Director-at-Large on the Union of BC Municipalities executive for the 2020-21 year. She will take a leave of absence from both those roles during the provincial writ period.
“John Horgan and the BC NDP have shown tremendous leadership taking us through the pandemic, and that’s the kind of leadership that British Columbia will need for the next four years,” added Hunter.
Fellow Kamloops councillor Dale Bass is endorsing Hunter’s candidacy for the NDP.
“She gets what the people of Kamloops North Thompson live. She’s been a single mom, she’s lived in subsidized housing, she’s worried about daycare, she’s travelled for healthcare. She’s a small business person,” she said. “She has such a full life that I think her history will resonate with anyone within the riding.”
“She’s going to be someone who really, really cares about people. Who really listens to people. Who doesn’t just collect facts and process them and move on. She’s going to listen to their stories and feel their stories, and she’s going to work with government and work with bureaucracy to make sure everyone is cared for within the riding.”
The BC Green Party has yet to name its candidate for the riding with the deadline to nominate candidates this Friday.
During the 2017 provincial election, Milobar won the riding by a margin of about 18 per cent over the NDP’s Barb Nederpel.
