Expansion of the Car 40 program in Kamloops could become a reality soon or remain on the backburner depending on who wins this weekend’s provincial election.
The program, which has a nurse accompanying the RCMP on mental health calls, currently runs 40 hours a week and many city councillors have been outspoken about a need to expand it. Any expansion depends on funding from Interior Health.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, NDP candidate for Kamloops – North Thompson, Sadie Hunter, wondered if expanding Car 40 is the right way to go.
“There’s a lot questions around whether or not that’s the right service that we need in Kamloops or if we need something different. Is that the right solution? So, I know there’s been a ton of discussion at the city, you know even at city council, trying to figure out what the barriers are. Is this the right service and is this going to provide the right solution in our city?
“My answer to that is because we want to provide a solution that makes sense and is the right fit, so we’re definitely working towards providing those resources and training to first responders and those on the ground. The most important thing is to look at the overall investments that have been made in wraparound services, including housing, and then to continue to move toward the solution that makes the most sense and will have the greatest impact.”
Meantime, BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson was in Kamloops earlier this month to promise an expansion to Car 40 to make it 24-7, if elected.
