The BC Liberals could name an interim caucus leader within two weeks.
That’s according to Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone, who was commenting now that final votes have been counted.
“The caucus will now be confronted with the most important first decision, and that is to determine who is that interim leader moving forward. Andrew Wilkinson has indicated to all of us he will step aside if caucus decides to select an interim leader. So that’s good, I think that’s very critical,” Stone says.
He adds the interim caucus leader will have a main responsibility of leading the official opposition through the spring session at the B.C. Legislature, from February to May.
“Again, we’re looking at a period here of six to 12 months. But even to put a finer point on it, it really is who is that person who’s going to lead us through one session? The good news is, amongst the 28 people there’s a whole bunch of folks who I think would be very capable and confident in doing that.
“That certainly is the very first decision the new caucus is going to have to make. I would expect we would make it over the next couple of weeks.”
With rumours Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Peter Milobar may be appointed interim caucus leader, Stone would only say his colleague is capable and has the respect of his party.
Milobar, though, is not saying yet whether he has aspirations to seek interim caucus leadership.
“I’m not trying to be evasive, but it’s all of these types of roles. I think everyone gets into leadership positions like an MLA because they do have leadership qualities. So those are things that will be discussed among caucus and we’ll find a way forward as a group.”
He says COVID-19 also makes it more difficult for caucus to get together to discuss what will happen next.
