The city of Kamloops says Tranquille Road between Southill Street and Nicolani Drive will be open to all traffic starting Monday, Nov. 23.
Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says all detours will be removed and the speed limit will return to 60 km/hr, noting that all bus stops all Tranquille Road will also be open.
That said, there will be some temporary lane closures on Tranquille Road between Holt and Singh streets to allow crews to finish some work on the centre median and the Goodwin Avenue retaining wall.
In addition to replacing the sewer main, a new multi-use pathway was built on the south side of Tranquille Road between Southill Street and Desmond Street. A new bus bay pull-out was also built west of the Desmond and Tranquille Road intersection.
As traffic returns to the area, Crundwell says there are a couple of changes to lane configurations that drivers will have to get used to. First, there will be a dedicated centre lane for left hand turns between Southill and Desmond streets, while at the Desmond and Tranquille intersection, there will be dedicated left turn lanes in both directions.
“These improvements were implemented to provide a safer corridor for motorists, pedestrians, and for active transportation,” Crundwell said.
Work will resume from Singh Street east to 12th Street next spring, along with landscaping work from Southill Street to 12th Street and further upgrades along the corridor, including pedestrian paths, landscaping, and intersection and boulevard improvements.
“Its somewhat normal operations for the rest of the winter this year and heading into next year,” Crundwell told NL News.
“Generally you know with our climate and weather, we can usually get started sometime in March and then we hope to be finished the project from Singh Street to 12th Street, it will take us into next summer and then we’ll be complete.”
The project was supposed to begin in March of this year, but it was delayed to May because of COVID-19. Back in October, Crundwell told NL News that project is about halfway done and it should be completed in fall of 2021.
“The City and Extreme Excavating Ltd. recognize the impact the Tranquille Road project has had on Brocklehurst residents and businesses, as well as motorists, transit users, and pedestrians travelling within the project limits, and sincerely appreciate everyone’s support and patience throughout this year’s work,” Crundwell added.
