Thompson Rivers University has received a donation of three-quarters of a million dollars to go towards studies for Indigenous students.
The $750,000 was donated by BMO, with $400,000 going to an Indigenous research mentorship program called “Knowledge Makers,” and $350,000 going to the TRU’s School of Nursing for both its campuses in Kamloops and Williams Lake.
“As a university, we have a responsibility in reconciliation. That includes honouring our relationship with the Secwépemc people on whose lands we reside, reducing barriers to post-secondary education and ensuring our learning community is a place where everyone truly belongs. Today’s announcement creates more opportunities for Indigenous learners to succeed,” TRU president Brett Fairbairn says.
About 10 per cent of students at TRU are Indigenous, according to university staff.
Today’s donation adds to TRU’s Limitless campaign, which has now raised more than $46 million of its $50-million-dollar fundraising goal. BMO has now contributed $1.35 million to that campaign in the past seven years.
