The BC Wildfire Service says a small fire burning about 15 km north of Kamloops is currently under control.
Fire Information Officer Gagan Lidhran tells NL News the 16.2 hectare Strawberry Heights Road wildfire, east of Rayleigh, is not expected to grow any further.
“The fire was discovered yesterday and we had 14 BC Wildfire service staff on site along with fire origin and cause specialists who were investigating the cause of the fire,” she told NL News.
“Today, we have four crew members on site and they are doing the final patrol stage of the fire which means they’re assessing hot spots and extinguishing those. The fire was a grass fire primarily driven by the wind.”
Lidhran says like most early spring fires, this particular fire is believed be human caused, though she notes crews are still investigating. She previously told NL News the recent wildfires in the Kamloops area this month is a reminder of the risk that exists right now at lower elevations.
“Even though it’s not very hot, as we saw over the weekend there is potential for fires to start, due to that dry grass and the combustibility of the fuel. So we are reminding the public to please be extremely cautious with their fire usage, especially if they are outdoors or participating in any campfire activities,” Lidhran said.
“I think, because it is still spring time and the weather is a little bit cooler, overnight recoveries will support us in terms of fire suppression. But that doesn’t mean the public should get complacent or should presume that just because it’s still cooler out, that there is no potential of fires happening.”
