A member of the Kelowna Rockets cohort has tested positive for COVID-19, the first positive test result reported across the Western Hockey League.
The WHL says the positive test result was discovered during the initial return to play testing phase, though it will not identify the person affected.
“The individual who has tested positive will be required to isolate away from the team cohort and follow directions from the regional public health authority,” the statement said. “One other member of the Kelowna Rockets cohort is considered a close contact of the individual who has tested positive.”
“As a result, both individuals have entered into self-isolation and will follow all regional public health guidelines.”
Players and staff in the B.C. Division began self-quarantining on March 6 before reporting to their respective WHL hub city of Kamloops or Kelowna last Saturday, March 13, where they were tested for COVID-19 ahead of a second quarantine period. They will have to undergo a second COVID-19 test before they’re allowed to take part in any team activity.
“Due to the fact the positive test result for COVID-19 was discovered during the initial return to play testing phase for the Kelowna Rockets and prior to the Club beginning team activities, other members of the team cohort are permitted to continue on the original timeline associated with their return to play,” the WHL statement added.
If one or more players or staff test positive for COVID-19 at any point during the season, all team activities will have to be suspended for a minimum of 14 days.
At this time, the WHL says there are no B.C. Division games that have to be rescheduled, with the Rockets still set to begin their season next Friday, March 26 against the Victoria Royals.
The first Kamloops-Kelowna game is still scheduled for Tuesday, March 30 at Prospera Place.
