Kamloops RCMP responded twice over the weekend to reports of fires being lit in a parking lot, and police are now looking for more information.
Const. Crystal Evelyn says the first call came in at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, in a parking lot in the 100-block of Knox Street on the North Shore. There were two men involved and one man had a gas can.
Evelyn says police showed up and warned the two men not to light fires. But after police left, another fire was set at the same location, and a building near the parking lot had to be evacuated.
There is word on any arrests being made as result of those incidents, but Evelyn says police are now looking for surveillance and for any witnesses to come forward.
Kamloops Police Seize 50 Grams of Meth During Traffic Stop
There were just under 500 calls for service to Kamloops RCMP between Friday and Tuesday; another significant call in that time saw police seize 50 grams of methamphetamine after pulling over a suspected impaired driver.
Evelyn says it happened just after 10 p.m. on Saturday night, on the East Trans Canada Highway.
She says Mounties were called about a suspected impaired driver, and that vehicle was in an accident with a semi-truck minutes later.
When police arrived, they saw what appeared to be a firearm on the front seat; it was later determined to be a paintball gun.
The man driving the vehicle was arrested, and a search of the vehicle then found the 50 grams of meth.
It’s unclear if charges will be laid from the incident.
Mounties Snag Stolen Cheques During Break-and-Enter Call
Stolen cheques were seized by police after being called to something burning in a motel room in Valleyview.
Evelyn says police responded to a motel in the 1700-block of the East Trans-Canada Highway on Friday night at 10:30 p.m., where reports suggested a person who had been evicted had broken into a room and set something on fire.
Police determined the burning smell was from a burnt towel, and officers also found stolen cheques in the room.
It appears no arrest was made but the investigation is ongoing.
Evelyn also asks people with information on crime to call the detachment, at 250-828-3000. For less serious crimes, like stolen or damaged property with no suspects or witnesses, residents are asked to use the online crime reporting tool, which can be found here.
