Kamloops basketball product Kelly Olynyk has once again accepted the call from his country.
The South Kamloops Secondary grad will wear the Maple Leaf next month as Canada looks to qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. Olynyk was one of 21 players invited to attend training camp in Tampa, Florida from June 16 to 24.
“There is no greater feeling in sports than the chance to represent your country on the highest international stage at the Olympic Games,” Rowan Barrett, the General Manager of Basketball Canada’s senior men’s program, said in a statement.
“Our players and staff fully recognize the unique opportunity that lies ahead of us and I would like to commend them for their dedication to playing for Canada this summer.”
Olynyk is currently a member of the Houston Rockets after he was traded by the Miami Heat at the NBA trade deadline in March. He is one of 14 NBA players on Canada’s training camp roster.
Canada is hosting one of four Olympic qualifying tournaments, in Victoria, between June 29 and July 4. The Canadians will be in a group with Greece and China. Uruguay, the Czech Republic, and Turkey are the other three teams taking part in the tournament.
The winner of the Victoria tournament will move on to face Iran, France, and the USA in Group A at the Summer Olympics.
Canada is currently ranked 21st in the world and they’re looking to return to the Olympics for the first time since 2000.
