A well-known community builder has been honored by Thompson Rivers University.
Norm Daley is one of four people who will receive an honorary degree on June 17.
Daley is known for his volunteerism and community involvement. He is an accountant and among other things, he co-owns the Kamloops NorthPaws baseball team and is the chair of the Kamloops Centre for the Arts society.
He says it’s an honour to be recognized by TRU.
“I found out well over a year ago, and it was sort of delayed, because of all of things going on in the world with the COVID-19 pandemic. And so I just had to kind of keep it under my hat for an extended period of time. Which is fine, it’s just such a great honour to be recognized and to get the official word on that,” Daley says.
“I’ve just been fortunate to work with great people. Whether it’s with the arts, or whether it’s with things like sporting events and things like that. At the end of the day, I just decided to get involved early on in life and I’ve just met so many terrific people and made so many terrific friendships from the involvement.”
He says will give a virtual message to graduates during TRU’s convocations, and says he plans to talk about how he got to this point.
“Try to give them some words of encouragement as they start on their journeys with their degrees. And making sure they hopefully have some awareness of what it takes to be able to be a part of the community. That’s the biggest thing for me, that I moved to Kamloops and was able to embrace it, and Kamloops embraced me.”
Other honorary degree recipients are journalist Andre Picard, computer scientist Maria Klawe, and lawyer Marvin Storrow.
