The chief of Tk‘emlúps te Secwepemc says “absolutely” she believes there are more children out there, after remains of 215 children were found outside the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Rosanne Casimir says crews have not searched all of the residential school grounds and says there’s still more be discovered.
“We do know that many other First Nations that have had residential schools in their communities, also, too, want to learn, and want to use new technology to be able to find their lost loved ones as well.”
She was also asked what she wants people to take away from this horrific discovery and the plight of residential schools.
“It’s a harsh reality, and it’s our truths. It’s our history, and it’s something that we’ve always had to fight to prove. And to be me it’s always been a horrible, horrible history, that’s basically been denied from government.”
Casimir says the goal moving forward is for the truth to come out and for the lost children to be honoured.
In an update on Monday from the office of the chief, Casimir says the band is “continuing to gather all the facts in this evolving tragedy,” and says the public will be apprised as a contractor continues to investigate the burial grounds.
