Kamloops Fire and Rescue is asking residents in the area to be on high alert because of the increase in fire risk with the extreme heat in the region.
“With this heat event, the risk of interface wildfires increases. Residents are asked to be vigilant and be aware of the dry conditions,” Fire Chief Steve Robinson said.
“Be sure to fully extinguish cigarettes and discard them in an appropriate manner—if you smoke in your vehicle, consider using an empty pop or water bottle to safely place cigarette butts for disposal later.”
As well, with Canada Day next week, people are being told that fireworks or pyrotechnical devices cannot be used without an appropriate permit, as per Fire Prevention Bylaw No. 10-37. The use of fireworks is already restricted because of an open burning ban across the province.
“Use extreme caution if you use welding or grinding equipment and other items that cause sparks, such as bear bangers, which can start fires,” Robinson added.
People are being told to dial 911 and report all fires within city limits. Outside of city limits, you can call 911 or *5555 from a cell phone.
If you are reporting a fire, Robinson says to try and give the operator the exact location and size of the fire, the colour, density, and volume of the smoke, along with the type of vegetation and terrain in the area where the fire is burning.
As well, he says to let them know if there are any homes at risk and what the best way to access the fire is, if at all possible.
