Kamloops firefighters say the Kamloops East interface fire in Juniper and Valleyview is under control as of this morning.
“We are very happy with what we are seeing right now,” Fire Chief Steve Robinson, said in a statement.
Firefighters from Kamloops and the BC Wildfire Service were on site overnight, with Robinson noting conditions were stable through the night. There will still be ground and air crews working to today to extinguish hot spots.
The lightning-caused Kamloops East interface fire was sparked in the hills between Valleyview and Juniper Ridge on Thursday night. It led to the brief evacuations of some residents Thursday night though all orders were lifted on Friday morning.
The fire flared up Friday afternoon, but no evacuation orders or alerts were required given the work of ground and air crews.
Robinson says the additional fire resources requested from the Province have arrived in Kamloops to support any further firefighting efforts, if needed. Those include three Structural Protection Units (SPUs), which are trailers equipped with various fire suppression equipment.
Fire engines from five other municipalities’ have also arrived in the City, Robinson noted, to supplement KFR’s resources, should it be needed.
“Residents may see these engines driving around getting familiarized with the city,” he said. “KFR is thankful for the support from these other municipalities.”
The City of Kamloops’ Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) will remain operating. People are again being told to stop all irrigation to protect the water supply for the fire crews.
The Juniper Dog Park is also temporarily closed as its being used as a staging area by firefighters.
“We understand and acknowledge this time is difficult for everybody and the stress level may be high,” Robinson said.
“The measures we are taking are proactive and not taken lightly. The City of Kamloops is working hard to ensure the safety of our community, and residents’ continued cooperation is recognized and appreciated.”
