The BC Government is launching a campaign called ‘Vax for BC’ as it tries to target people still not vaccinated against COVID 19 over the next two weeks.
It says from today until the end of August, there will be community events and mobile clinics across the province where people can simply walk up and get their first or second dose – without an appointment – if they’re not vaccinated or if they’ve waited at least seven weeks since their first dose.
As it stands, about 906,000 British Columbians are unvaccinated – the majority by percentage in Northern Health followed by Interior Health.
A campaign on Aug. 4 called Walk-in Wednesday will make 20,000 doses available at clinics before a push later in the month and in September to target young people returning to school.
Data shows 96 per cent of the new COVID cases in the province are among people who are either partially vaccinated or not vaccinated at all. Broken down further – that’s 68 per cent of cases in people not vaccinated at all, while 28 per cent are in partially vaccinated people.
Less than five per cent of COVID-19 cases between June 15 and July 15 were among fully vaccinated people.
Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, says 78 per cent of people hospitalized with COVID-19 were unvaccinated, while 18 per cent of people hospitalized with the virus had only one shot.
As of July 26, 80.6 per cent of people 12 and older have gotten one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 61.3 per cent of people are been fully vaccinated.
