While election day is just over a week away, you will be able to cast your ballot at an advanced poll from today, Sept. 10, until Monday, Sept. 13.
Elections Canada spokesperson Andrea Marantz says the details on where you can vote will be on your voter information card, which you should have gotten in the mail by now.
If you haven’t gotten it though, you can find that information online, by phone at 1-800-463-6868, or at an Elections Canada office.
“Polling stations will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and you have to remember, it is a little bit different with this Federal Election,” Marantz said. “You can’t just pull into any advanced polling place, you have to go to the polling place that you are assigned to.”
“Anybody can vote at an advanced poll. You don’t need to set it up, you just need to go. If you arrive at your polling place, you can vote. If you are not registered, you can still register at the advanced polls.”
Marantz is also reminding people that the deadline to apply to vote by mail is this Tuesday, September 14 at 6 p.m. So far, about 674,663 applications have come in from people looking to vote by mail this federal election. Of that, 289,380 such ballots have already been returned to Elections Canada.
Once your application to vote by mail is approved, you cannot change your mind and vote in person, either at an advanced poll or on Election Day, which is September 20.
“That is because we have to take your name off of the national list of electors and this is really to protect from the possibility of people voting twice,” Marantz said. “If you are in your own riding, you can actually take your ballot into your returning office or have someone else take your ballot and put it into a special box that will be there.”
The list of Kamloops-area candidates was finalized yesterday with five parties – the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, Greens, and People’s Party of Canada – running candidates in all four local ridings. There are also two independent candidates on the ballot in Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo.
Advanced polls are set to take place next weekend, from September 10 to 13, though people can also vote at any Elections Canada office before 6 p.m. on September 14.
