Extreme weather Sunday afternoon has forced the closure of the Coquihalla south of Merritt and the Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon and Fraser Valley.
A mudslide just south of the Coquihalla Summit forced the highway to close down just before noon, and, at time of posting, there’s still no estimated time of reopening.
Meanwhile, in the Fraser Canyon, a rock slide between Boston Bar and Yale has Highway 1 shut down, also with no estimated time of reopening. Further north, there’s a travel advisory between Lytton and Spences Bridge because of the risk of a mudslide in areas damaged by the Lytton Creek wildfire.
And in the Fraser Valley, just east of Chilliwack, a mudslide has also closed the Trans-Canada Highway. A local detour is in place, and drivers are being told to avoid travelling between Hope and Chilliwack unless it’s for an essential reason.
These closures come as a rainfall warning is in place today because of heavy rain, combined with warm temperatures and melting snow at higher elevations.
The rainstorm is expected to last until Monday afternoon for most of southern B.C. The Coquihalla Summit is forecast to see up to 90 millimetres of rain before the storm ends, while Highway 1 south of Lytton could see 80 mm.
Meanwhile, east of Kamloops, a winter storm warning is in place at Rogers Pass on the Trans-Canada Highway, where 30-50 centimetres of snow is forecast between today and Monday afternoon.
A snowfall warning is also still in place for the Yellowhead Highway from Tete Jaune Cache to the Alberta border, where up to 10 cm of snow is in the forecast for today.
Drivers are told to check Drive BC for updates on highway conditions.
