B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after one man taken to hospital in Kamloops after a robbery at local mall on Friday, Dec. 3.
In a statement, RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet says while officers were en route to that call, they were told about a second theft from the same mall though she did not specify which mall it was.
“Witnesses from the second theft provided a description of one of the suspects. Officers later located a person matching the description riding a bike and attempted to pull him over. The suspect reportedly attempted to flee, but officers managed to bring him to a stop and arrest him,” she said.
“After the suspect was taken into custody officers noted that he appeared to have suffered an injury and was taken to hospital.”
Shoihet says the Independent Investigations Officer of BC (IIO BC) will be investigating the incident and the actions of the police officers.
In a statement, the IIO says the cyclist got into Riverside Park after he was spooted near the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Lansdowne Street. He sustained “serious injuries” while being taken into custody.
In a statement, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson, Const. Crystal Evelyn told NL News this incident is not connected to an armed robbery near the Lansdowne Village Shopping Centre around the same time Friday evening, where two people were arrested.
