For the second straight year, the Kamloops Blazers will have two players on Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
Both forward Logan Stankoven and goaltender Dylan Garand were named to the team Sunday night for the tournament which is set to begin on Boxing Day in Edmonton and Red Deer.
Garand, 19, was already announced as one of three goaltenders on Team Canada, but Stankoven, 18, was considered a 50/50 shot to make it. The Kamloops native missed Saturday’s scrimmage but impressed on Sunday, when he opened the scoring for Team Canada against the U-Sports all-stars.
Garand, defenceman Kaiden Guhle, and forward Cole Perfetti were all part of Team Canada that was beaten 2-0 by the United States in the 2021 world junior final in Edmonton.
Regina Pats forward, Connor Bedard was also named to Team Canada at the age of 16, the seventh player in history to do so. The North Vancouver native, joins Wayne Gretzky (1978), Eric Lindros (1990), Jason Spezza and Jay Bouwmeester (2000), Sidney Crosby (2004) and Connor McDavid (2014) as the other in that elusive club.
Shane Wright, the consensus first overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, was released from selection camp a year ago at 16, though he earned a spot on the team this time at 17.
Team Canada now heads to Banff for a training camp before pre-tournament games against Switzerland and Finland next week.
Canada opens the tournament on Boxing Day against the Czech Republic at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
