With toxic drugs claiming the lives of six British Columbians every day in 2021, Moms Stop the Harm is holding a rally in Kamloops tomorrow, Feb. 10.
It will be coinciding with similar rallies taking place in Vancouver and Victoria.
Kamloops rally organizer Glenn Hilke tells NL News he wants to see Kamloopsians gather at the offices of MLAs Todd Stone and Peter Milobar at 10 a.m. to bring attention to the overdose crisis.
“For those that really want to put their lives on the line symbolically, for 77 seconds people will be able to lie down on a tarp outside the offices of the MLAs to remember the 77 people that died in Kamloops last year,” he said. “These are two seats of power and influence and obviously they represent our community here in Kamloops.”
“The provincial government can take some steps, and we feel that Mr. Milobar and Mr. Stone can exert their influence even though their party is not in power to demand that there be some movement right now.”
Hilke says the situation across B.C. has been getting worse over the past two years. He’s hoping to see three “simple” changes made, which he feels will reduce the number of people who are duping of an overdose.
“Number one is a safe supply of drugs. Secondly, we need to decriminalize personal possession for small amounts of these poisonous drugs,” Hilke said. “And then finally we need to create more treatment centres, rehab centres locally for people who want to get into recovery.”
