One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire in a house on Seymour Street on Tuesday night, Feb. 15.
Kamloops Fire and Rescue were called around 9:30 p.m. to 668 Seymour Street downtown.
Platoon Capt. Mike Haines tells NL News the fire started on the stove but spread into the attic.
“We had to pull some of the ceiling down to access hotspots,” he said, around 10:25 p.m. “The guys are just out changing their bottles, and they’ll go back inside and finish mopping up.”
“The house was full of smoke, but all three occupants inside got out with the two dogs. The cat got left behind but our guys found it and got it out safely as well.”
Haines says the person who had to go to hospital went back into the house to try and find the cat, something he says is not a good idea.
“Pets have a way of getting out in situations like this or they hunker down in a place where they feel safe,” Haines added.
He says this fire was unrelated to a series of other downtown fires, including at Memorial Arena on Sunday and at two abandoned houses – one at the corner of Nicola and Fourth Avenue early on Feb. 5 and another on Fifth Avenue, between Battle and Nicola streets, on Jan. 28.
“It was completely unrelated. It was something to do with something on the stove. That’s the best that we can tell at this time,” Haines said.
