There will be a new mayor in Sun Peaks after this fall’s municipal election.
Al Raine, who was first elected in 2010 as the inaugural mayor of the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, is the only person who has ever hdld that office for the last 12 years.
But after four terms as mayor, Raine says it is time for something else, noting he pans to stay busy with more skiing and by staying active in the community.
“I hope to stay active in the community, but Nancy [Greene Raine] and I would like to travel,” Raine said on NL Newsday. “We haven’t been to Europe in 20 years. We have lots of friends there, and we want to visit them and other folks, but we’ll still stay active in the community somehow.”
“If I can help, I will help, but I think 12 years of being mayor, its time to see if we can find a younger generation to take over.”
Raine isn’t the only person on Sun Peaks council who is not seeking re-election. Fellow councillors Mario Pozza and Ines Popig, who like Raine have been on council since 2010, are stepping aside.
“We’ve had a good council and a great time. We’ve progressed and lots of good things have happened in Sun Peaks,” Raine added.
“You might have heard that in the latest census, we were at over 1,400 full time residents. When the municipality was formed, we were just around 350 residents.”
The municipal election is set for Oct. 15.
