Almost six years after he was brutally assaulted with a baseball bat in Kamloops, Jessie Simpson will be going home to Savona on weekends.
His mother, Sue Simpson, tells NL News she is incredibly happy that her now 24-year-old son will be home this May long weekend.
“He needs to stay on schedule doing his rehabilitation which isn’t on the weekends, so he’s free to come home and relax with mom,” Sue said. “At this point in time, it only works for weekends, and it’s better for his health that he go back [to The Hamlets at Westsyde] to do his rehabilitation which he’s doing so good with.”
Sue says while caring for Jessie alone on weekends will be a big job as he requires constant attention, she is looking forward to be able to spend some time alone with him.
“I’m going to bring him home, I’m going to turn the TV on and we’re going to sit together and have a bedtime snack in our own house, and tuck him in and welcome him home,” Sue said. “I’m just going to make him feel loved. It’s been six years, and [he’s finally] home with your mama. Bringing him back is going to be the hardest part.”
Sue also says she’s made several upgrades to the family home so she would be able to bring Jessie home again. There was a chance that Jessie would have been home in time for his birthday last July, but that did not materialize.
“Everything is good except for our van at this point in time. We found out today that it is not approved and it is going to need some modifications that won’t be covered, which leaves us with a $5,000 bill to bring Jessie home through taxicabs for this whole summer,” Sue said.
“I’ll definitely be doing some fundraising in the next month to cover that cost.”
Sue says Jesse is making significant progress since the June 19, 2016 attack after he accidentally wandered into Kristopher Teichrieb’s yard in Brocklehurst while intoxicated. The attack left the then-18-year-old with permanent brain injuries and in need of 24-7 care.
Teichrieb meanwhile has since been given statutory release after serving two-thirds of his seven-year sentence for aggravated assault. He was also ordered to pay nearly $7 million in damages to the Simpson family, though the Simpson’s have yet to see a penny.
Sue is also planning to begin a Justice for Jessie petition next month, the details of which are still being worked out.
