Following in the footsteps of other leaders in the region, the Mayor of Logan Lake has confirmed her decision not to run again in October.
Robin Smith says part of her decision is based on the strain of what the community went through last year with the wildfires which threatened Logan Lake.
She says family also played a big role in her decision.
“My husband’s just got a few more years of work, and we’ve sort of said that ultimately we would like to land on the [Vancouver] Island for our retirement,” she said.
Smith, who has been the Mayor of Logan Lake for the past 10 years, admits it wasn’t an easy decision to walk away.
“I’ve loved every minute of it,” she said. “The toughest decision of this whole thing [time in office] was actually making the decision to give up my position.”
At this point, she says she’s not sure who in the community may step up to replace her in October. However, she adds who ever that person may be, they need to have the future of the community in mind.
“We’re a small community. But now the world is changing a lot for rural communities,” Smith suggested. “People are looking at them a lot more as a much, much better option to the cities these days.”
Smith’s decision not to run follows on the heels of Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian and Sun Peaks Mayor Al Raine confirming their decisions not to contest the vote in October as well.
