Two Kamloops Blazers picked up major awards at this afternoon’s Canadian Hockey League Awards Banquet in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Logan Stankoven was named the CHL Player of the Year, the first Blazer to win the award since Rob Brown in 1986-87, while Dylan Garand took home CHL Goaltender of the Year honours, the first Blazer to do so since Corey Hirsch in 1991-92.
“To win this award, and join the likes of past winners like Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Alex DeBrincat… it means a lot to me. It is such an honour,” Stankoven told NL Sports.
“I did some research ahead of the awards to see the other names. There’s so many other great players across the CHL that could have won this award as well.”
The Kamloops native put up 45 goals and 59 assists for 104 points this past season. He then went on to lead the WHL in playoff scoring with 17 goals and 31 points as the Blazers fell to the Seattle Thunderbirds in seven games in the Western Conference Final.
Stankoven, a draft pick of the Dallas Stars beat out OHL nominee Wyatt Johnston of the Windsor Spitfires and QMJHL representative William Dufour of the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Garand meanwhile set a new Blazers record in Goals Against Average (GAA) this season at 2.16. He was tied for most regular season wins with 34 and had a .925 save percentage with four shutouts. The Victoria native then posted a 1.93 GAA in the playoffs with a .933 save percentage and three shutouts.
A draft pick of the New York Rangers, Garand beat out OHL nominee Brett Brochu of the London Knights and Samuel Richard of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the QMJHL.
Stankoven was also the runner-up for the Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year, losing to Halifax Mooseheads forward Jordan Dumais.
Connor Levis missed out on the CHL Top Scholastic Player of the Year Award, as the award went to Owen Beck of the Mississauga Steelheads. He was trying to join both Devan Dubnyk and Scott Niedermayer as former Blazer winners.
