RCMP say an innocent bystander was injured during the shooting at the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds yesterday, July 3.
In an update this morning, police also say the two victims of the shooting – which they believe was targeted – are expected to survive. Both victims were taken to hospital, according to the RCMP.
Staff Sgt. Darren Dodge, the acting officer-in-charge of the Williams Lake RCMP Detachment, says the investigation remains “a priority” and is ongoing.
Police say shots rang out at around 3:30 in the afternoon Sunday leading to the evacuation of about 3,000 people on the last day of the Williams Lake Stampede which was making its return after a two-year absence.
“Our team is currently working on responding to issues of lost personal items during evacuation and to the emotional distress of many patrons, volunteers, and vendors,” the Williams Lake Stampede Association said, in a facebook post Monday.
“We want our community to know that this is all being handled with thoughtfulness to ensure property is returned to the rightful owner and that those impacted emotionally will have the supports they require.”
While RCMP have not released details about the person who was taken into custody Sunday, the BC Prosecution Service told NL News that charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life have been approved against Jordell Anthony Sellars.
“Mr. Sellars has been remanded in custody to appear on July 11 in Williams Lake Provincial Court,” spokesperson Dan McLaughlin said, in an email. “As the matter is now before the court the BCPS will have no further comment at this time.”
In April 2020, Sellars was arrested and charged one count of murder, one count of attempt murder, and one count of kidnapping in the death of Branton Regner.
McLaughlin says prosecutors determined the “charges against Mr. Sellars no longer met the charge assessment standard.”
People with information or video of the July 3 Stampede shooting who have not yet spoken to police are being told to contact the Williams Lake RCMP at (250) 392-6211.
