The City of Kamloops anticipates construction work along the Summit Drive Interchange, to finish-up a new multi-use pathway, should be completed before the end of the month.
This construction is being blamed for a significant traffic tie-up on Tuesday, with some drivers waiting a half-hour or longer to get through the area.
Capital Projects manager Darren Crundwell believes the issue may have been a “one-off.”
“I’m going to say it was probably just bad timing with the construction that was starting and school starting because we haven’t had any other issues or concerns or complaints on traffic or traffic issues there.”
Despite the tie up, Crundwell concedes the end results will be worth it.
“The project is going well, I think it looks great, its a fantastic community project, fully grant funded, that provides another important bicycle multi-use path corridor between downtown and Sahali,” he said.
“Our active transportation team does have a plan for a full multi-use path network from Aberdeen all the way downtown.”
Meanwhile, motorists are being warned of potential delays because of that same project, which is a broader, inter-connected series of walking and biking trails from Summit to downtown.
Next week will see construction start on a dedicated bicycle lane down 6th avenue, from Columbia to the Bus Loop, which should be finished by the end of November.
