Snow plows working to clear runways at Vancouver International/via YVR Twitter
More flight problems in and out of Kamloops — and across Canada — today for a couple of different reasons.
Due to the backlog at Vancouver International from Tuesday, two Air Canada flights in and out of Kamloops this morning have already been cancelled.
A third is still scheduled for mid-afternoon (3pm), but is still an open question.
Kamloops Airport Manager Ed Ratuski has also confirmed another WestJet flight had to be cancelled this morning out of Kamloops.
WestJet has already cancelled close to 100 of its flights today, with more expected to be scrubbed throughout the day due to frigid temperatures in Alberta not allowing planes to be properly de-iced.
According to WestJet:
86 cancellations (563 flights originally scheduled), cancellations are projected to increase throughout day. (As of 8am PST)
Critical factors impacting operations:
- Frigid temperatures across Alberta, Northern B.C.
- Temperatures so cold in Alberta, de-icing fluid limitations at –29C, additional de-icing information can be sought from airport authorities
- Safety remains top priority as outside conditions for workers are incredibly challenging, prioritizing safety and required breaks
- YVR snow event cascade resulting in significant cancellations yesterday, departure management program and continued cold temperatures
Meantime, Vancouver (YVR) is also holding back international flights until Friday morning, meaning any guests from overseas you might be expecting in-time for Christmas might not be here in time.
