The Shtuka family is in Sun Peaks this weekend to mark the five year anniversary of Ryan’s disappearance.
Ryan’s mother, Heather, his father Scott, and the rest of the family are in the mountain village for the sombre anniversary which will be marked by the annual Run for Ryan group ski and a candlelight vigil walk.
“This is an opportunity for the Sun Peaks community and guests to gather and show their support for the Shtuka family while keeping Ryan top of mind five years since he was reported missing from Sun Peaks,” a facebook post from Sun Peaks Resort said.
Speaking on the NL Noon Report, Heather Shtuka says they’re also looking at creating something a bit more permanent at Sun Peaks, beyond the annual events.
“We want to continue to spread awareness for Ryan and so for us to do something that is little more reflective of continuing that awareness piece for Ryan up in Sun Peaks, that is sort of what we are looking at where people have to sit and learn about his story,” she said, on the NL Noon Report.
Shtuka, who will be holding a book signing at Chapters in Kamloops on Saturday and at the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel on Sunday, says while she is pleased that people are reading her latest book titled Missing from Me, her writing career may not be over.
“I’d like to do a children’s book,” she added. “I’d like to look at creating something for navigate through when they have a missing loved on, so that they can know what to expect.”
As in previous years, the Run for Ryan will take place at 3 p.m. this afternoon. Participants are being told to meet at the top of the Sunburst Express chairlift for a group ski down the 5 Mile run.
They can then then take either the Village Platter or Village Carpet to the top – where Ryan worked while in Sun Peaks – and share in some hot chocolate and stories.
The candlelight vigil walk will get going at 7 p.m. at the top of Sun Peaks village with people making their way towards the clocktower.
